So, am back! Writing is not easy so when I blow my own trumpet for managing to write yet another post, do bear with me. Actually, a writer needs inspiration to produce something good. Some people are motivated by the idea that writing can be a good source of money. Some go for the option of talking their hurt out on paper through pen. Others have words forming in their heads and, without finding a way to vent, the skull will crack open synonymous to a volcano of craziness. There are many more reasons for writing. Either way, you are a writer if you write anything. The question is; are you able to convey your message to the deepest sinuses of understanding, beneath the mental faculties of your readers? One group of writers are not only required to implement this feat, but are also bound by the stakes of grades that are at risk of gaining the title of a fail. These are academic writers. The question is, are you an Academic writer? Are you so organized at thought level and so richly informed that your ideas will pass through the percolating brain of a student and penetrate, sink, and impact the spongy, yet critical, experienced mind of tutors?
Back to Inspiration.
In my previous posts, many of my readers (I bet including you) got back to me with questions like: how do I become an academic writer? What is hard about being an academic writer? What do I need to be an Academic writer? Are some people born to become academic writers? (To this final question I would respond with a short inaudible “LOL” but, of course, I won’t). These were the questions that inspired me to write on an ideal academic writer. I don’t mean to brag, but I aim to please and I succeed a millionth of the time. So, an Academic writer?!
There is no formula to being anything. All you need to do is get into the game, learn the game and change the rules of the game (if you use this line without quoting me, I will sue your behind). By saying this I don’t mean you bring all the rules of your village, which include running around naked at night, or crème de la creming the internet, or ochollaing whatsapp groups. No. I am saying the rules of every place are always there to be followed. Once you’ve mastered all the requirements by learning from people, doing plenty of research, and doing plenty of practice, you can then become creative on how to make the field better and better. You can leave your mark…
….Leave your mark on the wallow of fame of academic writers.
So to be an academic writer, one must be ready to learn at all times. This assertion is based on several characteristics of tutoring students and working as a research assistant to busy scholars. Some of the students with whom you will work are engaging in multidisciplinary endeavors. They learn many subjects. If that is too complex, let us imagine a scenario where there is only one subject in question. Say, Business Studies. There are many aspects of business that one will have to cover in order to come out waving a college diploma or degree certificate. If its psychology you are studying, for example, you will need to know the psychology of fetuses, toddlers, children, teenagers, girls, boys, women, men, senior citizens, pregnant women, and of course, our newest “hero” (Drrrrum rolllls!) Sir Mollis! (pardon me for not mentioning him with the rest of the pack, the likes of Bro. Ocholla. Saving the best for last, perhaps). All am trying to get to that planet above your neck is that there is a lot to research about, learn, apply, and please your student the student about. An academic writer has to be ready to do extensive research. Again, our generation of Academic writers is lucky because of there is a wide range of resources waiting for them in the internet. An academic writer should be humble. Well, the good book calls it meek and embeds a promise of inheriting the earth in it. Perhaps the humility I am talking about are is related.
Just read on and judge.
Humility in Academic Writing means that you have accepted your position in the society, you are willing to share your genius, and you are able to act like the advisor to the president when He or she gives a speech on the success of an action you directed him to take. You should be able to watch the student you tutored or assisted in their research graduate with a distinction, smile about it, and take pride in having assisted someone make it in the education life. I won’t direct you on how to handle such situations. But the Humility rule does stipulate on page “I don’t know” of chapter “don’t bother,” that you should accept and move on. You should accept that, even if you are busy studying, working, or engrossed in the productive field of Unemployment, you still have some extra time to help a busy student in the diaspora with their homework. In fact, you should give it your all. In other words, for an academic writer, if not any other thing, the statement I love my job, but I love money more, applies perfectly. Like I said in so, you want to be a writer? Being broke, willingness to help, and any other reasons that people give for adorning the heavy crown of an academic writer, are the ideas that may perform an alshabaabic action on their heads if not taken care of.
This point is particularly important because the field is dominated by young people who seek to help other young people. Many a times, unless an esteemed guest is expected in the little room I talked about in academic writing in Kenya, a young man’s room will always be devoid of any space on which to step. Tidiness is never a priority. However, an academic writer, should write a paper that is completely organized. If it helps, you can (despite the durations of dry spells) seek to think of the paper as a room that can be accessed by the esteemed guests any time. In short, an academic writer ought to be really creative with their imaginations and focus them to their work for positive ends. Sometimes, it is important to dream about sleeping coz sleeping will be a rare, yet required commodity. So, if one needs to join academic writing or get better at it, they will need to come into contact with these, and many more, of the requirements. The online writer, academic tutor, the helper, the freelancer, the friend… are just some of the titles that this bunch of guys are given. They are great people. They are an asset to countries where teachers like the streets better than classrooms, universities and colleges where students are too busy to concentrate, and if you want to join them, let’s start with whether writing is your talent.
